Plum Island

A sustainable pollinator paradise

My clients are avid gardeners with a large veggie garden area and fruit trees. The property is near the beach and has very sandy soil and a copious amount of bunnies.  They wanted an outdoor lounging area and pathways from the outdoor shower to the back door that would look great and keep their feet clean.  Low water use, pollinator friendly, and season long colorful plants were added in place of high maintenance lawn.

Project goal

The clients wanted a useable area where they could sit outside, garden, and enjoy pollinators. The before pictures show how sandy the soil is. They only had a small step made from scrap deck boards under the slider and the other back door, by the garage. There was nothing connecting the doors and the outdoor shower,

The results

A bluestone patio and small deck area were added with bluestone pavers connecting everything together.  No-mow Pennsylvania Sedge was added under the orchard trees.  Colorful, low water use shrubs, perennials and grasses were added for the enjoyment of both the homeowners and pollinators.
